地球上でいま音を立てて進行している異常気象や飢餓や戦争。この時代に居合わせた以上、この現実から目をそらすわけにはゆかない。俳句も例外ではないはずだ。作者は恐るべき地球の現状を悲しみながら、それでも希望であり救いともなる力強い映像を描き出した。８０億の人間、一人一人に一つずつ心臓がある。これは苦しみの渦中にある世界へのメッセージである。
〈Comment〉
On the face of this Earth, climate change, famine, and war are unfolding dramatically. We cannot turn a blind eye to this reality that has been happening even beyond this generation. This haiku poet, while mourning the alarming state of the Earth, has depicted a powerful image that summons hope and salvation. There are eight billion humans, each with a beating heart. This is a message to a world engulfed in suffering.

丘に挟まれた土地で歌われる羊飼いの歌は、小さな種が風で運ばれて行くように、遠くの人にも届きます。羊飼いが澄んだ声で歌う歌は、人々に安らぎを感じさせ、優しい心にさせることでしょう。植物の種が運ばれた土地で芽を出して育つことと同じように、羊飼いの優しい心も遠くまで届き、やがては丘を越えて、世界中に広がって行くことでしょう。種という小さなものから大きな世界を想像させた点が優れています。
〈Comment〉
Like small seeds carried by the wind, a shepherd’s song sung in the land between hills can travel to distant people. The song, sung by a shepherd’s bright and clear voice, allows these people to feel at peace, bringing kindness to their hearts. In the same way that a plant’s seeds carried to new lands will sprout and grow, the shepherd’s kind soul will be far-reaching, over the hills, and across the world. Imagining a large world from something as small as a seed is an excellent point made in this haiku.

この俳句は小さな子どもの具体的な姿を見せており、指で穴を掘って大地に深く種を押し込んでいる少女が想像できる。少女は、娘を見守る母親の足もとにしゃがんでいる。
“deep”と”shadow”、そしてある程度”little”という言葉も、この詩により深みを加え、読者に母と子の関係を想像させるとともに、”mum’s shadow”によって時間軸も加わり、お母さんの人生史を想像させる。私たちは、この子どもの将来の人生をも想像するように導かれている。実に壮大な俳句である！
〈Comment〉
This haiku presents a concrete image of a young child, I imagine the mother's daughter, with her fingers plunged deep into the earth, digging a hole for the seeds. She is crouched down close to her mother, near her feet, and her mother looks on protectively. The words "deep" and "shadow", and to a lesser extent "little" add a deeper dimension to the poem, causing the reader to imagine the relationship between the mother and child, while bringing in a historical-temporal aspect through "mum's shadow". We are led on to imagine the future life of the child as well. A truly magnificent haiku!
